We have read the poem The Journey by Neil Griffiths. We created our own versions of the poem thinking about a journey in Antarctica.

(Just a photograph)

We learnt the poem and used expression in our voices to perform it- have a look on Learn Anywhere at our video.

We also sang the poem and added musical accompaniment using percussion instruments- this video is also on Learn Anywhere.

We enjoyed this so much that we want to perform it for the whole school next week in assembly.

We are enjoying our new topic The Big Freeze and have been finding out about Captain Scott's expedition to Antarctica. We thought about the equipment he would have and what we might need if we wanted to go on a similar expedition. We had to think hard about what we would be able to carry, where and what we would sleep in and how we would cook and keep warm.

We each wrote a letter to Scott to explain why we would be good people to go on his expedition. We though about the qualities and explorer would need and what would make us stand out from other children. We told him we had some new technologies that would help him- walkie talkies, camera's and a torch that does not need batteries. We explained how these would be useful.

We thought that a great drink would be hot chocolate as we could take the power and use the melted snow as water. We wrote instructions to explain how to make a hot chocolate and Mrs Hunter made us some too! Yummy!

We have been talking about the gifts we received over Christmas and how we loved spending time with our families. We thought about people who may not have had a good Christmas and came up with a list of people who we need to say a wish for.

Families who have soldiers fighting in conflicts.
Old people who may not have any visitors.
People effected by the floods.
Children in Africa.
Families who do not have a home or money to pay for food and clothes.
People who may be ill and in hospital.

We all wrote a wish to hang on our tree and we are blowing them over the rainbow to see if we can make them come true. We are asking God to help these people too.

There is a special wishes jar too if you would like to come and put a wish in it for somebody else!

I hope you have all had a great Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all your families. I wanted to say a huge THANK YOU for the lovely Christmas cards, gorgeous gifts and Christmas wishes I received. I was truly humbled and overwhelmed thank you so much, what a lucky teacher I am.
We had a brilliant half term learning all about London Now and London Then and will finish the topic over the next few days before moving onto our new topic The Big Freeze. The children worked so hard and are making amazing progress. Remember to look at our class BLOG on the school website to find out what we have been doing and on Learn Anywhere (using your child’s username and password) where I  will post any videos or website links we have been using.
Through our new topic The Big Freeze, I will be introducing the children to places in the world that are cold, they will be finding out about the continents in the world, looking at habitats of animals and investigating ice. Our role play will be changed into our very own Ice Cream Parlour- how exciting! If you have any plastic or metal ice cream scoops or bowls, old ice cream tubs, small bottles we can make into sprinkle jars, sundae spoons or can pop into an ice cream shop on your travels and ask for some freebie bowls, spoons etc for school I would be extremely grateful and it will make our shop look even more realistic. Watch out for some pictures on the BLOG.
We have said goodbye to Miss Whittaker, our student teacher, for now as she continues her teaching practice at Friezland School. She will return after the Whit holiday and complete her placement during the summer term. In three weeks’ time we will welcome Miss. Fernando, another teaching student, who will be with us until Whit. This is her second teaching placement and she is looking forward to getting to know the children and planning exciting lessons alongside myself.

Thank you so much for your continued support with learning at home, The children are making fantastic progress with their reading, they are enjoying the range of books we read during guided reading sessions and it is lovely to see the children reading a range of books at home, including books borrowed from the library. Spellings will be checked on Friday’s with new spelling also given on this day and reading books changed weekly. The new home work sheet will be stuck in this week and I have tried to add a few more maths activities. In the next few weeks I will be sending home more information about the methods the children have been learning to help them to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems.
Please send PE kits back asap and remember we try to get the children out in all weathers so please make sure they always have a warm waterproof coat, gloves and hats, especially on snowy days as we will be having fun playing, investigating and experimenting in the snow. (I always have a tin of hot chocolate in my stock cupboard ready to add to our milk to warm us up after our fun!)

Thank you so much for your continued support with the children’s learning at home and for always providing boxes and junk for our creations. Next half term we will be going on a trip to Salford Museum- I will send out more information nearer the time.

We have been creating our own model of London Then. We each made our own Tudor house- some children chose to do The Bakery and St Paul's Cathedral. We used recycled materials to create our models and had to really think about what the houses looked like in 1666. This helped us to choose the correct colours for our houses. We enjoy going into this area in our classroom and reading the information books and researching about the fire on the I-Pad's.
